Rethinking fluid resuscitation from first principles
If we treat IV fluid as a drug, safety and efficacy become separate questions. An antibiotic can be safe in a patient and still ineffective against the organism. Fluid behaves the same way, and conflating the two can lead to harm.
The Safe and Fluid Effective Resuscitation (SaFER) protocol, published in Springer Nature's SN Comprehensive Clinical Medicine this year, is a physiological framework for asking both: not only whether fluid can be given safely, but whether it will actually work.
Using this framework, Dr. Kenny will walk through how to answer both questions at the bedside, and what to do when the answers diverge.

Jon-Emile S. Kenny, MD, M.Sc.
Dr. Jon-Emile Kenny is a pulmonary and critical care physician and the Chief Medical Officer at Flosonics Medical. He earned his medical degree from the University of Toronto and completed his residency and chief residency in internal medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Stanford University Medical Center. He also holds a Master of Medical Science and Education with distinction from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden.
Internationally recognized for his expertise in hemodynamics and resuscitation physiology, Dr. Kenny's academic work has advanced the understanding of cardiovascular physiology at the bedside, emphasizing precision resuscitation and the integration of physiology into clinical decision-making. He is the creator of Heart-Lung.org, an educational platform reaching a global audience, and a long-time contributor to PulmCCM.org.
Dr. Kenny has published in leading journals including Critical Care, Chest, and Nature Biotechnology, and is known for making complex physiology accessible and clinically actionable.
